A counterfeit rabies vaccine (Abhayrab; Human Biologics Institute) is being distributed through unauthorised sources; the extent of its potential distribution is unknown. The counterfeit vaccine is labelled ‘Rabies Vaccine, Human I.P.’, while the registered vaccine is labelled "Rabies Vaccine B.P. “Rab.”
Travelers should take precautions against animal bites (see
factsheet rabies) and, if necessary, get vaccinated before their trip. If postexposure treatment is needed, those who received a rabies vaccine in Zimbabwe should promptly consult their healthcare provider to assess the need for revaccination. In some cases, traveling to another country may be necessary to obtain a dependable source of rabies vaccine.
